Repousse is a technique for creating a three dimensional relief from a thin sheet of metal. In the technique I use, small punches and hammers are used to stretch and distort the metal while it is held securely in a pitch bowl. The end product is thinner, lighter and of better quality than casting. The only drawback is that each piece is made singularly and It is best for one-off work, not for multiples.
Much of my repousse work are ornamental pieces in frames while some are jewelry pieces. I work in copper, silver and occasionally in steel or gold.
